Looking for adventure? Looking to make friends and meeting new people? Or even just having fun during your stay in Jordan? You need to know where to go and what to do. Now as international students, that might not be as easy as it seems. Luckily, we’re here to help!

In this section you will find categories of suggested places, events and even hacks to having fun around Jordan. LET’S START:

Tourism – exploring the country - :

1-    petra-4351361_1920.jpgPetra and Wadi Rum: okay yeah you know all about Petra and how amazing it is. It’s the ancient 2000-year old city - it’s one of the seven world wonders. But what people have seen from Petra, doesn’t account for more than 15% of it, so there’s a lot more to discover. If you’re looking for a couple of days of exploring Petra’s secrets, then you better pack your bags and book the nearest ride there. Now you can’t go to Petra and not spend time in Wadi Rum, it’s one of the most famous attractions in Jordan, especially for adventure enthusiasts; you can ride buggies, go climbing, and even ride hot air balloon. Then you can camp through the night and enjoy the most beautiful sunrise of that desert sky

Tip: Always prepare your desert wear; it can be annoying and even dangerous if you are not dressed in a suitable manner that fits the desert environment. Now if you’re not well aware of what to wear. Have no fear, an external link is here: https://www.wadirumnomads.com/how-to-dress-for-desert/

2-    sea-4426384_1920.jpgThe Dead Sea: If you’re afraid of getting stung by a jellyfish, then you have nothing to worry about on your trip to the Dead Sea; no sea creature would survive the level of Salt in there. You however, could benefit so much from it, the water and mud are actually known to have healing powers that we personally would like to call ‘’ magic like’’ . But that’s not the only reason to go there, the dead sea is a whole entertainment area waiting for you just one hour ride away. You have multiple hotels, resorts, restaurants, a museum and a water park.

mosaic-4124642_1920.jpgTip: when dipping yourself in the water, make sure you have no open cuts because that hurts a lot hell, trust a fellow human being who has been burned by the sea salts due to this simple mistake.

3-    Madaba: history and art are what Madaba is all about. No matter where you go in that city, you get to enjoy the aesthetic of their mosaic arts. As for where to go; you can visit churches like; Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George & The church of the Apostles. And you can visit mosques like the mosque of Jesus Christ – yes that’s what it’s called because it sends out a message of togetherness and love- . You can go to mount Nebo and enjoy a view you have never seen before. And finally you can visit La Storia tourism complex which is a museum that would take you on journey through time since the beginning of history and till this day. After which you can enjoy a meal on the restaurant right above it.

Tip: this might be an obvious tip, but listen to the stories this city tells you, they’re right around every corner and they’re magical.

4-    Jerash: Jerash is known for its highly preserved ancient ruins, so if you were a fan of great historical places and want to have an insight on ancient Jordan, you should totally visit some places in Jerash including the Hippodrome, Hadrian's Arch, the forum and the temple of Artemis.

Tip: make sure you try Jerash’s dairy products as it is very famous for them especially what like to call ‘’ labaneh Jerasheyyeh’’.

5-    00c407f3-caaf-4b08-b631-0588a42d9bbf.jpgAqaba: Due to the clean and colourful coral reefs, diving and snorkelling is a great activity to do during your stay in Aqaba. In case you don’t like diving or the weather was not as suitable, you can always go for the glass-bottom boat tours that are widely available.

jordan-4125065_1920.jpgTip: nothing completes a dinner by the shore than trying Aqaba’s famous Sayadiah dish which consists of rice and fresh fish.

6-    Karak: Jordan is known for its’ hiking experiences due to its diverse nature and mountains. Therefore you can’t live in Jordan without going on a hike at least once, therefore during the hiking season from April to October you can consider hiking in Wadi al Mujib Siq Trail that starts off in Karak and ends in the Dead Sea area.

Tip: hold tight to your belongings whilst hiking rough roads, because if you drop something then you pretty much lost it forever.

7-    mayyas-3650375_1920.jpgIrbid: You may as well head north to Irbid, and visit the archaeological site of Um Qais which is the ancient ruins of Gadara city. For more ancient ruins you might as well find Beit Ras, and Pella located in Irbid.

photo-1535042930989-4027ef726da3.jpgTip: If your visit to Irbid happens to take place during the olive harvest, you can join people or watch this beautiful activity that almost every person in town participates in.

8-    Ajloun: There you can go sightseeing to the Ajloun Castle that was built back in the 12th century. Many areas inside the castle are open for tourists to explore along with a museum that portrays many artefacts from different periods of time.

Tip: wear comfortable clothes and your best walking shoes because it’s going to be a long walk to see all of Ajloun’s great attractions.

We could go on and on about the tourism attractions around Jordan, but we’re going to stick with the ones already mentioned and start talking about every day places you can visit at any time. Cause that’s what university life is all about (aside from studying- stay in school kids!)

FOOD

One of the best things about travelling to new places is the experience of trying their local cuisine, here in Jordan you can find a variety of Jordanian and Middle Eastern restaurants that not only cook you delicious meals, but also organize the atmosphere around you to feel like you’re in a movie. And if you’re not feeling the Middle Eastern food vibe, there’s nothing to worry about, there’s no type of food that isn’t available here in Amman.

You can start by going to the heart of Amman- AKA downtown- where you would find an abundance of local restaurants that would serve you some of our most famous meals like; Mansaf, Maglouba, and Mloukeyya. Trust me; you’ll be wearing an ‘’ I love Mansaf ‘’ shirt in no time.

Then if you’re lucky, you’ll find the alley where they sell the most delicious Knafa in Jordan. You can walk around eating Mastaka ice cream with nuts on top, or you can slurp on a cup of liquorice juice (yup, such thing exists and it’s delicious).

Now if you’re planning to have breakfast in Amman, you have more options that you can imagine, you can have Hummus and Falafel pretty much anywhere, you can have pastries from the bakery closest to your home, and if you’re really looking to live the Jordanian experience, try the traditional breakfast which consist of; Labneh, Za’tar and olive oil, eggs, white cheese and a cup of red tea. This breakfast is provided at most restaurants and cafes around Jordan.

There’s absolutely no problem here, if you live near the University of Jordan then you live near the area filled with all kinds of restaurant and food services, you can order almost anything to be delivered to your house, and you can even enjoy all the meals in our university restaurant which are very delicious and affordable.

ACTIVITIES

WhatsApp Image 2020-01-17 at 11.57.22 AM (1).jpegAre you an outside or an inside person? Do you enjoy crowded places or a cosy place with just you and your friends? Or are you like me where you decide your mood in the moment and look for a place to match that vibe? Here we’re going to explore all of your option and hopefully you can find your answer on this page.

Amman is known for its moderate weather most times of the year, so if you wake up and you find the sun is shining and birds singing. Pack your bags, call your friends and head to a pool of your choice; you can find one at the sports city, you can go to a hotel get access to the pool only, you can go to a private pool, and if you really want to take it to the next level, you can rent a small farm with a pool where you can enjoy a full day of fun.

But what if the weather is amazing and you don’t feel like swimming? That’s alright! Amman has a lot of outside activities for everyone:

-       You can go to the sports city and play pretty much any sport you like, however, soccer is the one most famous here.

-       You can go to a park where you pay a small entrance fee (ranging from 3-10 JDs) and you will be given tools and a place to prepare your own barbeque.

-       You can visit Al- Ma’wa which is a non profit foundation for rescuing wild life, yes it’s much smaller than a zoo, but you’ll be supporting wild life reservation and that’s always nice.

-       You can go Horseback riding near Al-Ordon Street or near the airport Street; there are horses for professionals, others for us who have ridden a horse maybe once or twice, and there are little ponies for kids.

-       If you’re more into riding bikes than riding horses, then you should keep a look out on cycling events that are almost every week, whether you want to join one here in Amman or a longer one in the Dead Sea. Check your Facebook every once in a while to find their schedules.

-       You can try outdoor activities like zip lining, bungee jumping, bubble soccer, Karting, and paintball all over Amman.

-        If you like to scream your lungs out, that can be arranged by a visit to the amusement park in Al-Mgabalain. Don’t worry though, it’s safe.

-       Finally, If you want to go extreme you can try sky diving but you have to go to the Dead Sea for that.

Now that’s all fun, but the weather is not great outside? Should you just sit at home wallow in sadness? NOO! We’ve got your back buddy. There are also a lot of places where you can have fun warm and dry.

Start by going to Al- Webdeh where you can find a lot of places to just grab a cup of coffee, read a book, and enjoy art around this part of the city. It is a very aesthetic area where most painters and artists show their work.

If you like to create your own art and not just enjoy other’s creations, then you can head to the creative art centre for a session of arts and crafts where you also meet people who enjoy this as much as you do.

You can then catch a movie in one of cinemas which are located in malls so even if there’s a bit of time until the starts, just book your ticket, go shopping then head back when it’s time for the movie.

What you can also do in some mall, is enjoy their closed activity areas where you can go the ice skating section, to the jump park, or even the amusement park (yes they may seem for kids, but why not release your inner child).

You can also go bowling or play billiards in venues around Amman, I recall one is in khalda and another is in Shmeisani, but there are a lot more, so check the nearest one and head there for an hour of fun.

If you like singing but your roommate keeps telling you to stop annoying him/her; then we have the solution for you, there are places that give you a room where you and your friends can sing karaoke, play guitar hero, or even watch a movie, you can also order food and drinks while doing that. There’s one of these places right beside the university’s north gate and there are more around the city.

If you’re a tech-enthusiast, then you’d love to try out the VR experience at one of the VR labs, or if you’re just interested in gaming, then there are networks and gaming lounges pretty much around every corner.

If you’re more of a board-game person, then you also have a lot of options; almost every cafe in Amman offers some board games like Jackaroo and backgammon. But the fun thing is that some cafes and coffee houses are now full on board game specialist where you can find any board game you want and they can teach you about the ones you don’t know about.

Don’t we all sometimes feel like we want to go wreck-it-Ralph all over the room but we can’t because – uhh life? Don’t keep it in you; go to a rage room where you can break whatever you want, let it all out, and go home safe and calm.

And finally, if you want to test your skills at analysing clues and coming up with plans, then you should definitely go to an escape room, where you can live different experiences like breaking out of jail, escaping a horror movie character and many more.
